The Northern Cape Provincial Growth and Development Strategy states that the only effective means by which the most significant challenge of the Northern Cape, namely poverty, can be addressed is sustainable economic development.
Accordingly, the PSDF will give practical effect to sustainable development which is defined as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainable development, as proposed by the PSDF, constitutes the enhancement of human well-being and environmental integrity through the efficient and just use of available resources.
Sustainable development cannot be ‘delivered’ to passive recipients – it requires active participation of all concerned and efficient integration of interests in a spirit of partnership. Sustainable development has to be ‘financed’ in an innovative manner. The PSDF will put forward strategies and guidelines to address these requirements.
